At MelodyMatch, we love getting to the heart of the people who bring music to life behind the scenes. Angie sat down with James Watts, an engineer and producer whose approach is equal parts technical precision and emotional instinct. With roots in classical music and a deep connection to R&B, Afro, and soul, James is building a career grounded in honesty, trust, and serious attention to detail.
Music was always part of the picture
For James, music wasn’t a choice—it was part of the air he breathed. “My parents are musicians, so it was normal growing up around instruments,” he shares. “I was learning from a young age.”
The iconic grime scene shaped James’ worldview on what was possible. The rise of rap legends Chipmunk, Skepta and Stormzy was the local representation he needed to show him the levels of success that was possible. Influenced early on by the grime scene like AJ Tracey —James began crafting beats on Logic Pro using just a laptop. “I just started developing my own sound,” he says.
Over time, his sonic palette expanded. Today, he’s equally inspired by the likes of Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. It’s a wide-reaching musical diet that flows into everything he creates, but when it comes to what he enjoys working on the most, it’s R&B, Afro, soul, and pop that feel like home.
From clueless tweaks to mix obsession
James’ first encounter with mixing came in sixth form. “Someone in my year had recorded a song in a studio and asked if I could mix and master it. I said yes, even though I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.” He laughs. “It sounded terrible.”
But that moment was a pivot point. “I realised how much I had to learn. From then on, I became obsessed with mixing and engineering.” And with no access to studios in his hometown of Milton Keynes, he carved his own path—working with as many local artists as possible, often in trap, rap, and drill.
“I’ve always loved problem-solving, and mixing is like a puzzle,” he explains. “Every small decision shifts the bigger picture. But it’s also art. That combination of logic and creativity is what drew me in—and still inspires me today.”
Hazey Studios, Milestones and Conquering Imposter Syndrome
It’s hard for James to pick one defining moment in his journey. However, his transition from Milton Keynes to working with big clients like BBC’s The One Show, fimmiuguerro, or Artan is incredibly impressive. Each milestone has helped James conquer his imposter syndrome that shadows so many creatives in the industry.
Joining Hazey Studios marked another turning point. “The first thing that caught my eye was the gear,” he says. “I’m a bit of a gear head. There’s something about great preamps and EQs that digital just can’t replicate.”
But beyond the equipment, it was the energy that sealed it. “The studio feels more like a lounge. Comfortable. A space where artists can actually relax and create.” He also connected deeply with his colleague Jef and the Hazey studio owner, forming a close-knit team with shared values and complementary skills.
Among James’ favourite sessions is his ongoing collaboration with RANES, a rising R&B artist from London. Their first track OYT set the tone for a creative partnership that has taken them all the way to Berlin to work on projects with RANES’ label. “There’s a record coming soon from those sessions that’s probably my favourite mix from last year,” he says.
Emotion is the centre of everything
James’ background as a musician is the foundation of everything he does in the studio. He started playing the bassoon at age eight, reaching grade seven by sixteen. It gave him a solid foundation in music theory, but more than that, it gave him perspective. “Playing in quartets and orchestras taught me how instruments interact—and how they shape emotion.” His journey has given him a deep understanding of music theory. But more than theory, it was playing in quartets and orchestras that taught him how instruments interact and shape emotion—an insight that now informs how he approaches recording, mixing, and mastering.
That understanding translates directly into his sessions. “Some people get too caught up in the technical side and forget we’re making art. For me, music always comes first.”
Whether he’s recording, mixing, or mastering, James leads with emotion. If a take feels right, he goes with it—even if it’s imperfect. “It’s hard to replicate raw emotion once you’ve heard that take. If it moves you, that’s the one.”
His ear for harmony and structure is instinctive. “Without trying, I can usually hear three or four harmonies as soon as I hear a top line,” he says. James’ deep trust in himself and from the artists he works with sets him apart. It’s his natural musicality that makes James makes him a great engineer. Whether it’s hearing three or four harmonies off the cuff or helping artists structure their ideas, his strong ear has being his leading collaborative tool.
“People come to me because they know I’ll treat their work with care,” he says. “Music holds infinite value to them. My job is to honour that.”
