For South East London-based producer Malaika Khan, music isn’t just something you hear — it’s something you live inside. Her sound is a cinematic experience: immersive, emotional, and intensely personal. And while she only began producing in December 2022, the depth of her music speaks to a creative spirit that has been quietly building for a lifetime.
A Studio Memory That Changed Everything
Every artist has that one moment — a turning point when everything clicks, not just in the music, but in who they are as a creator. For Malaika, that moment came while making her upcoming track Enlightenment.
“I had my first creative block,” she recalls. “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to make music anymore.”
But instead of giving in to self-doubt, she leaned in. Locked in her garage, she poured herself into the process. It took a full month — the longest she’s ever spent on a beat — and it tested every part of her. “The structure was really hard to grasp, but once everything clicked, I literally cried. Enlightenment is one of my most cherished beats because it represents me proving to MYSELF that I’m an artist.”
A Sound Inspired by Emotion
Malaika’s music draws inspiration from legends like Sade, Paul Hardcastle, Blue Six, Orbital, Opus III, and Samantha James — artists known for creating immersive, atmospheric soundscapes that feel like time capsules for emotion.
“Even before I started producing, I’d search endlessly for that one timeless song that could capture a feeling I couldn’t explain,” she says. That longing led her to GarageBand on her phone — a tool she still uses today. “I thought I needed a perfect studio setup, but honestly, I love the way I make music. I could be on the train home from work making a beat.”
Music as a Safe Space
Born to Pakistani parents and raised in South East London, Malaika has always had a special connection to music — but didn’t know how to translate that into creation until her early twenties. “I’ve dealt with a lot in my life,” she shares. “From undiagnosed neurodivergence, heartbreak, and spiritual growth, music became my outlet to express the emotions that words could never explain.”
Now, it’s a safe space she slips in and out of to process everything — grief, hope, confusion, and transformation.
Why Malaika’s Music Stands Alone
When asked what makes her music different, Malaika puts it simply: “It’s deeply immersive. Every sound has a purpose, like a character in a movie.”
Blending ambient, downtempo, jazz, dance, and electronic textures, her tracks are more than songs — they’re living moments. “I don’t make music to impress,” she says. “I make music to express. Whenever you listen to a Malaika track, you’re stepping into a real moment from my life.”
Her songs aren’t just sound — they’re sonic paintings. “Perfect for your main character moments.”
