After a powerful performance at Hoxton Hall, her presence and sound instantly caught our attention, and we knew we had to reach out for a conversation.
Nandii is a rare artist. Her sound floats somewhere between jazz, R&B, and Afro-soul, but pinning her down to one genre would be missing the point. We caught up with Nandii to explore the essence of her artistry, the moments that shaped her, and what makes her music unlike anything else out there.
From Classical Roots to Soulful Expression
Nandii’s journey began in the world of classical music. “I kind of stumbled into it because I knew I loved singing and wanted to be wherever I could do that.” She took the formal route: grades, training, discipline, but it wasn’t until university that she began unearthing her true sound. “Music has always been my place to release what’s in my heart and soul,” she says. “Though it’s taken many forms over the years, from classical to musical theatre to now recording, it’s always been about self-expression.”

What Makes Nandii Unique?
“I don’t follow rules,” Nandii says plainly. And it shows. Her work resists boxes. It’s intuitive, emotional, and raw. She sings about the unsaid – from heartbreak to identity – with a kind of bold softness that feels both tender and powerful. “At my core, I’m a rebellious spirit that feels deeply and creates from a raw, honest place. And while I don’t make traditional African music, I carry the spirit of my culture in everything I create.”

“I usually collaborate with musicians who are drawn to jazz, R&B, and Afro-soul, but in truth, it’s always an intuitive pull.”
When Nandii speaks about collaboration, it’s less about genre and more about energy. She gravitates toward artists whose sounds feel aligned on a soul level. “My music is influenced by so many different genres, shaped by the experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met, and the cultures I carry,” she says. “Because of that, I’m always open to hearing new things and exploring new sounds.”

A Defining Studio Moment: The Making of Stars
Among her growing catalogue, Stars holds a special place. “It was the first time I truly entered a flow state in the studio,” she recalls. Up until that point, Nandii had often battled with the pressure of doing things ‘right’. But during that session, something shifted. “I came in with some jazz chords I’d heard, and we just built from there. It felt effortless… I wasn’t in my head for once. It was freeing.” That moment marked a turning point in how she approached music – more play, less perfectionism.

Early Inspirations: A Lesson from Beyoncé
Long before she carved her own path, Nandii was inspired by the work ethic and vision of Beyoncé. “Not just for her voice, but for her deep commitment to her craft,” she explains. “As a creative, it’s easy to let ego get in the way, but Beyoncé shows what it means to stay a student of the art.” That philosophy of constant growth and exploration resonates deeply in Nandii’s own work.
Whether she’s experimenting in the studio or pouring out lyrics in the quiet of her room, Nandii’s work invites us to slow down, feel more, and be a little more human.
