For Myah, music wasn’t just a hobby she picked up – it’s been part of her story since childhood.
“I first started singing when I played Mary in my Year 3 nativity. I had some solo lines, and I’ve been singing ever since.”
From there, her journey took a natural creative progression: learning piano, teaching herself guitar, and eventually starting a band. Despite not coming from a musical family or friendship circle, she describes herself as “obsessed” with music from the start. Her childhood soundtrack was a diverse mix, from folk and rock to pop, soul, and funk but it was the latter three that truly struck a chord.
“I grew up listening to a lot of Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Jamiroquai – I really love Jamiroquai – Sister Sledge, Bruno Mars, and the Spice Girls. I love artists who really perform their music! They’ve all probably influenced my sound, and I think that comes through, especially in what’s coming next.”
The Accident That Became “Patience”
Myah’s latest single, Patience, was never part of the plan. She went into the studio ready to record a song she’d already written but nothing was working. At the time, she was emotionally and creatively drained, stuck in a rut that blurred the lines between her personal life and her music.
“I was listening to a lot of slow R&B to relax, and I ended up playing this mellow keys part. The first words that came out were, ‘Listen, let’s take this slow. Intentions aren’t set in stone.’ I didn’t plan them and I just needed to hear them. It was a reminder to be kinder to myself, to stop trying to have it all figured out.”
The song became an intimate reflection of her struggles with anxiety, creative paralysis, and the overwhelming nature of building a music career independently. “Patience” became her way of soothing that chaos and she invites her listeners to do the same.
A Creative Sisterhood
When it comes to visuals, Myah works closely with her friend Brooke, a creative director and photographer. “We share the same taste and we’re both at the start of our careers, so it’s inspiring to grow alongside another creative woman I trust,” she says.
Working together on the visuals for Patience felt effortless and fun. The pair even have dreams of starting a female-led creative collective, giving other women a space to build and grow together. “My music is from a woman’s perspective, so I love the idea of my visuals being shaped by other women too. It’s never just about the song, it’s about building a world around it.”
Studio Moments and Self-Discovery
Some of Myah’s favourite moments haven’t happened in a high-tech studio, but in improvised living room setups, tea towels and blankets doubling as soundproofing. “It made me realise how creative you can be with limitations. Honestly, it makes it more fun.”
But the studio isn’t always easy for her. “It can be a vulnerable place. I sometimes struggle with confidence in my ideas and feel mentally exposed. You have to push through discomfort to get to the good stuff. But when you do, it’s so, so rewarding.”
What Makes Myah’s Music Unique
Myah describes her sound as “modern British pop with old soul and funk” – groovy basslines, straightforward yet emotional lyrics, playful delivery, and unfiltered honesty.
“If you listen on the surface, it might sound like a fun, upbeat pop song but there’s often a cry for help in there somewhere,” she admits. She avoids overly poetic writing in favour of saying things directly, tackling topics many shy away from: emotional paralysis, self-sabotage, confusing dating dynamics, and even the experience of being manipulated by a narcissistic partner.
Her aim isn’t to dwell in the pain but to transform it into something empowering, whether through truth-telling, humour, or offering a way forward.
With Patience, Myah has given listeners not just a song, but an emotional reminder to slow down, breathe, and embrace imperfection. Her world of soul-infused, funk-kissed pop is only just beginning to unfold.
