For this husband-and-wife team, their journey running Studio 23 is a shared adventure – one that blends music, creativity, and partnership in perfect harmony.
What are the best things about running a studio as a husband and wife?
“The best thing about it is being able to support each other,” they share. “It’s amazing to have a partner who knows exactly what you’re going through, and it’s so cool to share the same passion. We also come from different musical backgrounds, so it’s exciting to introduce our personal styles into the mix. We’re constantly learning from each other.”
What inspired you to start your studio?
The vision for the studio started humbly, with a determination to move out of the family shed. “We always had a vision of running our own recording studio,” they share. “We’ve been drawn to spaces with a strong sense of musical history. Studio 23 has always been a place for musical invention, and we’re simply the newest iteration at the helm.”
What is your background, and what inspired you to start music?
Growing up in Walthamstow, they were surrounded by artists and creatives. “We always thought being in a band was the coolest thing you could do. As impressionable teenagers, we wanted a piece of that, and that’s what first drew us into music.”
What kind of musicians do you usually work with?
Rather than stick to one style, they keep things varied. “We base our decisions on whether an artist inspires us. That inspiration could come from the way they carry themselves, how they dress, or their sheer commitment to their sound. Those kinds of characters are fun to work with, and we like to keep things fun in the studio.”
Any memorable studio moments that stand out?
One session in particular is hard to forget. “We once worked with a band we discovered at a bar and invited them down to the studio because we loved their sound. We had the bright idea to recreate their live show in the studio, but all we had was a powerful haze machine and a single strobe light. We filled the room with smoke and flashed the strobe sporadically – sometimes right in their faces! We definitely freaked them out. It wasn’t the take we ended up using, and we had to clear the smoke because the bassist was asthmatic.”
One session in particular is hard to forget. “We once worked with a band we’d discovered at a bar and invited them down to the studio because we loved their sound. In a burst of inspiration, we decided to recreate their live show energy — but all we had was a powerful haze machine and a single strobe light. Soon the room was filled with smoke, and we started flashing the strobe sporadically, sometimes right in their faces!
We definitely freaked them out, and needless to say, it wasn’t the take we ended up using. In fact, we had to clear the room completely after the bassist’s asthma kicked in.”
A perfect story of the dedication it takes to get the right vibe, even if it doesn’t all go to plan. Studio 23 stands out for its passion-driven sessions.
The journey so far
For this husband-and-wife duo, running a studio is more than a business. It’s a way of life built on music, creativity, and support for one another. From blending their different musical styles to laughing through unforgettable (and smoky) studio sessions, their partnership continues to shape the atmosphere and artistry that defines their space.
