For singer-songwriter Ravel Lumba, music isn’t just a passion; it’s a lifelong dialogue with sound, soul, and storytelling. Growing up in a household where music flowed constantly, Ravel’s creative roots were planted early.
“My dad is a very talented DJ, so music was always being pumped into my brain as a child,” he shares. “I was surrounded by reggae, soul, and folk singers, and instantly felt a connection with what they were singing.”
That connection deepened in his late teens when he began experimenting with the guitar and songwriting. Those early moments would eventually shape his distinct musical identity.
Ravel’s earliest influences read like a who’s who of timeless artistry: Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Lauryn Hill, Eddie Vedder, Damien Rice, The Doors, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, and Etta James. “They’re all singers who bare their souls through their craft,” he says, “and that’s what I strive to do too.”
The Inspiration Behind “One Heart”
As Ravel gears up to record EP #3, he’s set to release two singles, with the first titled “One Heart.”
“It’s a song of remembrance,” he explains. “Something I feel we’ve lost. Deep within us all is a beating heart that we share, and that’s what unifies us no matter our background, colour, creed, or gender. I hope it brings a bit of unification to people.”
The track has already resonated deeply with audiences at live shows, where fans have been quick to sing along. To prepare for its release, Ravel’s been performing across London and the Midlands, sharing the song organically and building momentum through live connection and social media reels.
“Getting people to sing it back to me, that’s when it feels like something bigger than just a song.”
Collaborations That Keep the Creativity Flowing
Collaboration sits at the heart of Ravel’s creative process.
“I work with all kinds of creatives: singer-songwriters, producers, artists, painters. I love to collaborate, it helps me keep my creative brain pumping,” he says.
From jamming with other artists to inviting audience members to harmonize on stage, Ravel thrives in the energy of shared creativity. “It’s always tremendous fun,” he adds with a grin.
A Studio State of Mind
Ravel’s first studio experience remains etched in his memory. While recording his debut EP Songs From The Attic, one track in particular, “A Little Soul,” marked a defining moment.
“I remember sharing a silent look with my producer that just said, ‘We’ve made something very unique here.’ It was a very special moment.”
To him, the studio is sacred; a place where ideas transform into art.
“It’s a magical moment in time, where I and the producer combine talents and skills to create something timeless. There’s no feeling like taking a song you wrote in a random place, like an empty train station, and hearing it fully mixed and mastered, ready for the world.”
The Unmistakable Sound of Ravel Lumba
So what makes Ravel’s music stand out? For him, it’s simple: authenticity.
“My music comes from within me and evolves from my own life experiences, and those are unique. Nobody can write a song like me, because there’s only one Ravel Lumba.”
With “One Heart” on the horizon and a new EP in the works, Ravel continues to pour his truth into every lyric, chord, and melody, inviting listeners to not just hear, but feel.
