Loading: The Early Files That Built Y Kay
Raised in Catford, Southeast London, Y Kay’s musical world was shaped long before he ever stepped into a booth. His childhood home was a constant soundtrack of R&B, Soul and the theatrical flair of West End soundtracks, sounds that seeped into his foundation effortlessly.
“Music was always playing in the car, in the house, everywhere.”
He vividly remembers replaying “Dilemma” by Nelly & Kelly and “50/50” by Lemar nonstop as a kid.
“Those were the songs that made me fall in love with R&B.”
From there, he gravitated to the stars of the Y2K era: Usher, Ne Yo, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston. Their influence echoes through his tone, delivery and the emotional style he brings to his music today.
“If You’re Down” The Latest File in Y Kay’s R&B Folder
Y Kay’s new single “If You’re Down” began with a beat that struck him instantly. The instrumental, produced by T1mi, pulled him into a euphoric headspace where the beat called him to write about having a good time and letting loose.
“The bounce, melody and feeling of the beat enveloped me in euphoria.”
The track became an invitation to escape, unwind and enjoy the moment, a feel good anthem rooted in energy and release. To bring the visual side to life, Y Kay and his team at Woodside Studios crafted a visualiser and a range of stylistic content pieces designed to amplify the single’s vibe online.
“We wanted the visuals to match the bounce.”
Now that “If You’re Down” is out, the single marks another step in the sonic world he continues to build.
Creative Network: The Collaborators in His System
Collaboration has always been essential to Y Kay’s growth, and one of his strongest creative connections is with Rpizy, a Scottish Nigerian producer who understands him intuitively. Together they have built a catalogue of songs shaped by trust, experimentation and a shared vision.
“Rpizy just gets me. Working with him feels natural.”
Their work, including “Melodies Of My Subconscious”, is a testament to their synergy. Now, as his artistic palette broadens, he is opening the door to new collaborators across the world.
Inside the Studio: Where Y Kay Comes Alive
A standout moment in Y Kay’s creative journey took place in Gambia, during a holiday that unexpectedly turned into a powerful studio breakthrough. A spontaneous session with Gambian artist Mahaa D Hammer shifted his process from structured to intuitive.
“It felt spiritual. Pure vibes, no pressure.”
The track they created is one he plans to return to, confident that it is something special. For Y Kay, the studio is where creativity meets craftsmanship, a place where each harmony, adlib and verse is pieced together intentionally.
“The studio is like a factory. We are literally piecing together every element of a high quality song.”
This process, though meticulous, is what makes the end result feel so rewarding for him.
The Y Kay Signature: What Sets Him Apart
In a rising UK R&B landscape, Y Kay stands in a refreshing lane. Male led, uplifting, uptempo R&B rooted in Y2K flavour. Rather than centring his music on heartbreak or romance, he leans into confidence, nostalgia and pure feel good energy.
“My music is your hype man. Nostalgic yet brand new.”
Blending his early 2000s influences with modern production, he delivers a signature that is both familiar and innovative, a sound he proudly calls his own.
